2016 is the year for VR and AR (virtual reality and augmented reality). With the Oculus Rift reportedly becoming mainstream and available to consumers in Q1 of 2016, the virtual content that follows is going to be explosive. Likewise, with the advent of Google Cardboard, consumers literally have VR at their fingertips. Basically, if you’re not on board with VR starting now, you’re missing out.
You have also, no doubt, heard of augmented reality (AR) (queue the nostalgia for Google Glass), which differs from VR. AR blends reality with 3-D virtual overlays so a person can see both the virtual and the real-time realities simultaneously. Virtual applications transport the user into a completely new world. Both are absolutely awesome, and absolutely something you should include in your brand activations this year.
Some cool things to note about VR and AR:
- VR is currently one of the only ways to get complete focus on your content. Think about it: while wearing a VR headset, the user cannot be distracted by their smart phone. It’s a direct channel to your content with 100% focus.
- VR is one of the best ways to completely immerse users into your brand or experience. Given a 360-view of what is around, you can also add motion sensors and other effects (scents or music) to completely alter their senses and really bring users into another world.
- The future is in both applications. Deciding which one to use depends on your intention with the audience. Do you want to completely override reality, or just spice it up a bit? We create content for both, so just let us know.
