Meet Ivan Mihov, one of our new Art Directors at NEXT/NOW. An esteemed painter and photographer prior to his transition into experiential design, Ivan brings a unique, creative approach to digital that is bold and exciting. Check out our interview with Ivan below.
Tell us a little about your experience prior to NEXT/NOW:
Much of my experience comes from more of the traditional art world. Before I was a graphic designer, I worked a lot as a painter, photographer, and producer. Even now, I still create work in many different mediums freelancing outside the office. I had quite a long run a few years back working for Freeman, the trade show, exhibit, and event company. More recently, I also worked for Jack Morton just before I came here.
Notable brands Ivan has designed for:
- Northwestern Medical
- Miller Light
Tell us about a favorite project you have been a part of:
I worked on a packaging project for Hebros/Serdika deli foods about 15 years ago. Hebros is an old term for a region inside eastern Europe. Because the brand originated in the same place as I did, I designed the labels based on my childhood memories of growing up in Bulgaria. Now, there are many young European Americans that grew up eating Hebros that associate my design with their own childhood. That same nostalgia I got while designing it, they experience every time they see my labels in the grocery store. Even though my career has moved away from packaging since then, the cultural and generational impact that project created will always be something that sticks with me.
What do you like doing outside of work?
I create a lot of music (mostly electronic/techno) and love to play around on my MIDI. I also still paint in my free time and exhibit my work fairly often both in group shows and individual exhibitions. My favorite way to relax, however, will always be cooking.
How do you approach new creative challenges?
Head on. It’s the only way to do it. I think every project deserves a creative who is not intimidated by what’s in front of them. Even if the project involves new mediums that you may not be familiar with or is bigger in scale than anything you have done before, the most important thing is to be confident in your abilities and trust that your prior experience will guide you toward a successful outcome.
